Music and Dance Night

MUSIC & DANCE NIGHT

I take a part in our school's traditional ''Music and Dance Night''. Our teachers asked me to prepare a dance in a group of six with two kinds of music which are ''One_Ane Brun'' and ''Ötme Bülbül''. Also, they asked me to prepare a solo dance with a music ''Olmasa Mektubun''.

The intended aim for this 'Music and Dance Night'' was collecting donations for cancerous children beside preparing a show for parents. I'm proud that I took part in such a good and professional organization.

Getting ready for that show took my two months. In the first month, I worked to find the best dancers in my school. Then, I had problems like some of them told me that they won't come to Istanbul on 13th of June. Therefore, I started to look for other dancers and I took a while for me.

At last, I found my dance group and I started to stay at school and create a choreography for the music that had given to us. It didn't take me long to prepare a choreography but I had to find a choreography that everyone in my group would be able to do. Also, there had to be a movement that should show the stage full and energetic. After I created choreographies, I call my dance group and we started to work on. As our music performed by the school choir, we recognized some changes in music that effects our choreography. As there wasn't much time to make changes, even we get nervous at first, we come through that unlucky situation.

Through this organization, I feel that I really developed myself. If we look at this development from the perspective of IB student;

IB Learner Profile:

Thinkers: I used my critical thinking in unexpected situations as I lost some of my dancers through getting ready for the big night. Also, we made quick, professional changes when the music wasn't as we prepared our choreography. Besides critical thinking, I used my creative thinking through preparing a choreography.

Communicators: The most important part of being a leader of a group is being good at communication. I had a good, professional communication with both my teachers and friends. Therefore, things went fast and easy. We tried our best to understand each side in bad situations but everything resulted very great. I collaborated effectively by listening carefully to the perspectives of other individuals and groups.

Principled: I acted with integrity and honesty with a strong sense of fairness and justice. I was fair between my dancers. I listened to all their recommendations and problems. Also, I tried to put them in front of the dance to be fair.

Open-minded: The music that I had my solo dance was aiming to unite two continent (Greek and Turkey). It was something special for me in a way I was a metaphor of letter that has a specialty of unite two sides.

Caring: I show empathy, compassion, and respect. We have a commitment to service, and we act to make a positive difference in the lives of others. Our school provided us a chance to show commitment in social responsibility project. Collected donation for cancer children (KAÇUV).

Balanced: We showed respect for our physical and emotional differences, created our choreography according to that situation.

Reflective: We work to understand our strengths and weaknesses in order to support our learning and personal development.

CAS Learning Outcomes

1. Identify your own strengths and develop areas for personal growth.

As I chosen to be a leader of that dance group, I was able to bring together the dancers as I found them and teach two choreographies to them. Even we had some problems about meeting at the dance room because of the exams or deadlines of the homework but we find out a way after a talk. I feel that I developed myself in order to be able to talk and lead a group.
The main of that Music and Dance Night was to help cancerous children. Our school gave us a great chance to join that organization. According to that two music given to me in order to find a group and teach the choreography that I had done.

2. Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process.
At some point, I become desperate about creating the choreography and teaching that dance choreography to the dance group. Because I wanted everything to be perfect as I was chosen as a leader and the Music and Dance Night is a big and traditional event at our school. I pushed myself and made a good, serious talk and we started our dance. I developed my leadership. At least we had a great choreography and a great show. We achieved our aim.

3. Demonstrate how to initiate and plan a CAS experience.
As our school gave us a chance in order to help the social responsibility project about collecting donations cancerous children in the school show, we showed a commitment as taking place in the Music and Dance Night by dancing.

4. Show commitment to and perseverance in CAS experiences.
We take a action in raising awareness and collecting donation for cancerous children. Also, for that, I spent my 3 weeks in order to create a good choreography and be able to synchronize.

5. Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively
Some movements in my choreography were complicated and hard to do. Therefore, as we worked collaboratively, we find new movements that everyone was able to do and agreed to it.

6. Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance.
The aim of the Music and Dance Night was to raise awareness and collect donation for cancerous children. Therefore, as we take place in such an organization, we showed our awareness for cancerous children.

7. Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions
The fact that motivates us to dance and do the best that we can be the reason there we are working for cancerous children.

Ballet stage

I have been doing ballet for 4 years-old. After fourteen years I had a chance to become a ballet teacher as I got my certificate from MEB and done my compulsory practical training. As I'm an IB student, I spent my most of time with school works but when they call me to become more professional about being a teacher I accepted it. I love ballet and children. Therefore, I want to give my passion to them and make them love ballet as they remember me.
In the first month, we spent our time to acclimatize children to the new environment. As I also experienced when I was four, I know how everything looks huge and scary for the first time. Everything seems impossible but as time passes you have new friends and also your teachers become your best friend. As time passes we start our main posses in ballet and try them to teach ballet in a fun way with games. (learning outcome 1: Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth.) I learned how to deal with a child and how to understand things from her/his perspective. It was hard for the first time, but I communicated very well in a very short time. I'm something like friend/teacher to them. Actually, this was the exact thing that I wanted from the beginning because I don't want the dictatorship in class. I know how bad it is for my teachers at my ballet school. (Learning outcome 2: Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process.)  I have been going to ballet since the first semester of school on Friday at least for three hours. (Learning outcome 4: Show commitment to, and perseverance in, CAS experiences.)

Creativity

As we are planning and organizing new games in order to teach ballet in a fun way. Also, we are preparing a choreography for them in order to give them stage experience and show how beautiful it is to be applauded for your talent.

Activity

I go to ballet every Friday in order to teach ballet and prepare them to stage.

CAS Learning Outcomes:

1. Identify your own strengths and develop areas for personal growth. As I lead a class I developed my teaching skills and also leadership. Now, I'm able to lead a group even in a small age. As I'm a teacher as their friend it didn't become something hard to be a teacher for me.

2. Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process. As the students that I have been in the age gap between 4 to 5, sometimes it became hard to be a teacher and make them do the same thing I do.  But as I stay calm and friendly, I overcome these unbalanced relationships in the class and make them obey the rules of ballet.

3. Demonstrate how to initiate and plan a CAS experience. From the beginning of the year, everything that we were going to do that year was determined already. We just obey and follow the programme that has already determined. We start with small stretches, we teach what is really a ballet and create a choreography in order to put them on the stage in order to feel like a real ballerina. We motivate them and lead them to follow their dreams.

4. Show commitment to and perseverance in CAS experiences.

I went to the ballet course every Friday after school for three hours.

5. Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively.
As I get advice and worked collaboratively with the teachers of the Academy, I developed myself. By the help of my ballet teachers, I had a chance to see what is an ideal ballet teacher.

3-Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions. We show awareness of the consequences of choices and actions in planning and carrying out CAS experiences. Through these activities, we showed our awareness of autism.

ART Studio

As I want to be an architecture in the future. Therefore, I need to prepare a portfolio and learn the techniques in order to pass the talent exams required by schools. I started art studio at the beginning
of the November. It is a procedure that has been going on for two years. In next November I will complete my first year in the art studio. I spend my weekends at the art studio. On Saturday I spend 8
hours and as we are learning new techniques we learn how to use them within our imagination. We draw on 35x50 papers and work really academically. On Sunday I spend 6 hours and we are learning perspective. We start from the base like driving cube etc. and now we are designing room.
These lessons that I have through the studio will help me to prepare a good and valid portfolio as I’m also getting ready for the talent exams. Even I have one more year to go to the university, I feel like I developed my skills very professionally.
I will continue to go to the art studio in summer. I believe it is the time where I can best develop myself and have time to become something really good. Besides that, I’m planning to finish my portfolio in the summer.

Learning Outcomes

1- Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth.  Since my mother is an artist she inspired me since I was 4. I was always trying to draw like her and now I had taken my biggest and strongest step into the art world as I started to the art studio. Every week, I feel and see the development in my drawings. I know that it will also get better. I will try to become my best.

2-Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process. As I spend me all weekend in an art studio, it becomes really hard for me to arrange the school works with artworks. At the first, it was really hard for me to do a lot of things at the same time. But in time I get used to it and arranged my works.

3-Show commitment to, and perseverance in, CAS experiences. I demonstrate regular involvement and active engagement in CAS. I spend all my weekends in art studio since November.

Dog&Cat Shelter CAS PROJECT

Today’s one of the most important problems is the living conditions which is provided for animals. We took their nature from their hand and put them into concrete. While taking their rights, we don’t give them the respect they deserve.
For this situation, I decided to do a CAS project that is going to provide goods for the rights of dogs and cats. Even, I know that it doesn’t make a big change in their life, I want to help them as much as I can. As the first step of our CAS Project, I made a group by taking my other two friends. Secondly, we had a group discussion about how we can develop the idea of providing food for the dog&cat shelter. According to our discussion, we decided to sell something to collect money for dog and cat food. The first thing we decided to sell was cookies but we get a warning about if someone gets poisoned we could be the ones who are accused by the school. So we decided to sell keyholder. It was pretty good idea. We collected keyholders which are in shape of cat, dog, bone, and fish. We did a quite good donation as we also sell them out of school. After we collected the money, we bought huge packets of cat and dog food. After that, we looked for the shelter which seems more in need. After we had a talk with the head of the shelter we took our foods there. The shelter we found was in Ümraniye. We had a chance to see how these animals living in the given bad conditions. Most of them were sick and have been getting a treatment. There, we had a chance to talk with the vet of the shelter and according to our conversation, I can say that they are doing the best they can. I appreciate it. I also tried to do my best by providing food for the animals in the shelter with my team. After that visit to a shelter, I found out that this is the beginning of the help that I'm going to do to the shelters and I am going to work in order to raise awareness.

Creativity

We prepared and collected the keyholders which are in the shape of cat, dog, bone, and fish. As it is something that involves creative thinking and as keyholders shape is connected to the aim of the project we referred to 'creativity'.

Activity

After we arranged the keyholders we determined a cost for each of them. Then, we sold these keyholders to our parents, friends etc. We didn't just sell them between our school friends. The main aim of selling these keyholders to the people was to provide the amount of money to get the dog&cat food for the shelter and raise awareness of the conditions provided in the shelters.

Service

We bought cat and dog food from the money that has provided from selling keyholders. After we bought the foods we took them to shelter and see them that they are going to right and best place. These animals need help but for now, the only way to help them is to provide good quality and amount of food. Hope we will do better with more projects.

Learning Outcomes

1- I identified my own strengths and developed areas for growth. I had a personal development through my personal experiences. I always knew that the animals in shelters don't live under good conditions but I wasn't expecting that much. I saw how sick they are and need help. I get out of my comfort zone and see the world that does not appear or shown to us. I saw the sadness and desperate looks. For now, one of my aim for the future is to help shelters and get a dog which is in need.

2- I demonstrated that challenges have been undertaken, developed new skills in the process. As I worked in a group, I developed my communication skill. As we come together and have some discussions about what we can do in order to achieve our aim, we saw that we are stronger together in a way of developing our ideas and reflecting on them. Through this process, I learned what are the tactics of selling a product and which products are good and effective in such a donation works. For example, in this project, I learned that it is not a good idea to sell food instead of something more lasting. Also, as we went to the shelter and communicated with the head of the shelter in Ümraniye, I learned how to communicate with a cooperation. They were welcome to good and beneficial ideas, therefore, we didn't have a difficulty.

3- Demonstrate how to initiate and plan a CAS experience.  I showed awareness by building a   experience and by launching a new idea or process. We prepeared a one month plan and continued our project according to our plan. We didn't get out of the plan that we had determined at the beginning.

Plan of CAS Experience
1-5 May
5-12 May
 12-28 May
29 May
30 May
Collecting the group and having a discussion in order to create and develop or project plan.
Collecting and creating keyholders which are in the form of cat, dog, bone, and fish.
Selling keyholders to the friends, family etc.
Buying the dog and cat food from the money that had already collected.
Going to the dog shelter

4- Show commitment to, and perseverance in, CAS experiences. This was a process that took one month. During this time, as we worked collaboratively, we arranged our project in five part.  We showed commitment as we worked according to the deadlines that we had determined at the beginning of the process.

5- Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively. As we worked collaboratively, everything became easier. We prepared everything easily and very fast. We didn't have a problem with arranging our time. We sold our key holders and as we were three it didn't take too much time. We achieved the amount of money to buy dog&cat food.

6- Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance. We showed our awareness about animal rights. We see that people don't treat well to animals and cause them to be sick, cripple by not taking responsible actions. As we talked with the vet at the shelter, he said that people hit the animals especially cats on the road and left them there. Also said that sometimes they found them or someone brings them to the shelter. We aimed to raise awareness of the people by referring to the bad conditions of animal shelters.

7- Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions. I showed awareness of the consequences of choices and actions in planning and carrying out CAS experiences. Animal rights are important as much as human rights.

We tried to buy many art supplies in order to provide more than one option and be much more enable to teach new methods, drawing methods to them. There we had many children who experienced to draw with finger paint and watercolor painting. Besides that, we had many comments from parents about that they are very happy for their children to have an interest on these art supplies and told us that they are also going to provide this to their children when they are at home.

Activity

We went to Nesin Vakfı and make children draw something according to their imagination. Through that, we spent our all day with children. Contribute to their activities.

3-Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions. It was very nice organization. It helped children to spent a good time and remember 23 April as a very good, entertaining with full of good memories.
